How to test for lead

The best way to test for lead dust is through a sample collection procedure called a dust wipe. The LeadSmartâ„¢ kit from Hometest contains all the materials necessary to perform dust wipes in your home.

The LeadSmartâ„¢ kit also contains step-by-step instructions to guide you. The samples you collect are then sent to BTS EPA-recognized lead laboratory, BTS Laboratories, for analysis. Your results are faxed, e-mailed, standard mailed or available on-line to you within a few days.

LeadSmartâ„¢ can also be used to sample paint chips, soil, or water for lead content. BTS Laboratories uses EPA approved analytical methods to determine the lead content of your samples, then sends you a report that is easy to understand. We'll even give you helpful information about what to do if a lead problem exists.

Note: Instant chemical color-change test kits found in many retail stores are not recommended nor approved by the EPA. EPA Study, "A Field Test of Lead-based Paint Testing Technologies: Summary Report" (EPA 747-R-95-002, May 1995) have found them to be unreliable.

Two Important Notes

1. The Federal Standards for classifying lead-based paint, dust, soil and water are for regulatory purposes only. Paint that has any detectable amount of lead can create hazardous levels of lead dust. If you or your contractor has or will disturb paint that may contain lead, proper precautions should be taken.

2. Collecting one or two paint chips will not give you a conclusive indication of the presence of lead paint in your home. Levels of lead in paint can vary widely from spot to spot. Surfaces just a few feet apart often have different levels of lead. If your home was built before 1978, it is wise to assume that you are working with lead paint. You can hire a lead paint inspector to perform an inspection, or click here to learn more about precautions you should take.
